Something I Just Noticed

It just hit me. Smack in the face. Or near enough. I was walking through Phoenicia this Friday late afternoon, when I saw a man get out of his car and loosen the tie from his office suit as he rushed into the Post Office before it closed. And then I realized: I never see anybody in suits anymore. When you live in the country, there’s no need to conform to the straight and narrow expectations of the corporate set. Most people living round here have made a conscious decision to avoid the rat race. Meaning that if nobody else wears a suit, then nobody else needs wear a suit. It’s that simple. The only uniform round these parts is the lack of one. It’s the only kind of uniform I like.

Most firms have been business casual for 5 years ie. no suits.Accordingly, one does not see many suits in the city anymore either. So, I do not believe it is a good barometer to gauge anything. Sorry

Thanks for the post. When I’m in NYC, London, pretty much any city, I’m still very aware of people in suits. There may not be as many of them as 5 years ago, or the suits may not be as rigid, but they are there.

That said, no sooner had I put up that post on Friday than I regretted it, I felt like I was being smarmy or cocky. I have spent my life avoiding the need to wear a suit but I shouldn’t gloat. And it’s not a sufficient reason to move to the country. So I’ve taken the rare liberty of changing the headline.

Keep posting. Where do you live?
