Americans’ Tolerance for World Cup Soccer: High?
The graph I posted Friday, in the previous post, courtesy of my son Campbell and his Internet hunting, was humorous. It may be true of a percentage of the population. Indeed, last night in Phoenicia, one of the local mums/moms said to me “The World Cup? It’s still going?” But this woman doesn’t have a TV. And she doesn’t read the New York Post either. Generally speaking, I don’t read the New York Post either: only enough to know that it’s the very worst of Murdoch, a race-baiting, Obama-hating, lowest common denominator-serving right-wing rag. But it knows its sports. And its support of the USA, plastering the robbery of the team’s should’v’been winning goal against Slovenia last Friday across the whole of its front page and the whole of its back cover on Saturday’s edition, is encouraging indeed. Up in the Catskills, life turns much as it always does. Back down in NYC, I suspect, it’s football fever. And it looks like the USA fans are exhibiting as much of it as anyone else. Keep those covers coming.
