An iJamming YouTube interview: Arlene Smith

Thanks to my old friend Joly of punkcast.com for filming and now uploading to YouTube my reading at Barnes & Noble in Manhattan on November 13. This was the one where I spent most of the time on something of a plush stage in conversation with Arlene Smith, original lead singer with the Chantels. She proved a delightful interviewee, and many people came up afterwards to express how interesting it was to hear about the old days of the New York Rhythm & Blues scene. For those who don’t know, the Chantels were the first of the rock’n’roll female vocal groups, from New York or anywhere else come to that. Without them, who’d have known what would have become of the Shirelles, the Cookies, the Crystals, the Ronettes, or the Shangri-Las – let alone the sounds of Motown. Here’s the full video. (Warning: It’s over an hour long.)
