And You Were Living On Which Planet, Precisely?

“We had won the battle of Chicago. As I watched the acceptance speech of Hump-Free I knew we had smashed the Democrats’ chances and destroyed the two-party system in this country and perhaps with it electoral politics.”

Written by Abbie Hoffman mere days after the Yippies’ so-called Festival of Life at the Chicago Democratic National Convention, August 1968, was met by the full force of Mayor Daley’s police goons. Published in Hoffman’s book Revolution for the Hell of It. He was right about one part of it, however, for Republican Richard Nixon was elected President later in 1968, and again in 1972. Glad to know someone took credit for that.

    Hi Tony

BBC news on Channel 13 last night did a piece on what looks like a very interesting documentary on the Chicago Convention of ’68 coming out. Some neat footage.
Also recalls in the recesses of my brain from long ago a great re-enacted drama of the Chicago 7 or was it 8’s trial taking directly from the court transcripts and how funny yet at the same time frightening it was.

Agree with you though about the Abbie quote. To smash the 2 party system to make it a one party system is certainly asinine. We need to smash it to make it a 3 4 or 5 party system.

    Cheers
    Tom
