Back To Brass Tacks: Punk Rock 1977

For those of you who were either too young at the time, or didn’t live in the UK, or both, and have had difficulty understanding the enormous cultural/generation gap I describe in Boy About Town concerning Britain in 1977, when punk rock hit, this documentary/roundtable may prove enlightening.

Unearthed a year ago, Brass Tacks was shot around Manchester, but more interesting really than the documentary itself is the discussion that follows – featuring a frighteningly young Pete Shelley openly smoking in the studio, a younger-than-he-seemed-to-me-at-the-time John Peel openly drinking a can of Carlsberg, and a group of councillors and clergy straight-out of straight-laced UK casting central. “We have had punk rock in Birmingham, unfortunately…” says one, and it goes downhill from there.
