Boy About Town Number 37: Do Anything You Wanna Do
Chapter by Chapter excerpts from Boy About Town: A Memoir, published by Windmill Books/William Heinemann.
Sounds was the music paper of choice for us third years. Not Melody Maker, which seemed to be trying to ride out the new wave by pretending it didn’t exist. Not New Musical Express, which apart from its entertaining gossip page, ‘Thrills’, was too intellectual for us. No, it was Sounds, which seemed happy to celebrate loud music of any description – heavy metal as well as punk and new wave – and in a language we could understand. They seemed to be having fun with their music, which meant that we didn’t have to apologise in turn for liking the Boomtown Rats’ ‘Mary of the 4th Form’. (If only we could have girls in our fourth form.)
