Boy About Town Number 47: Doing Alright With The Boys

Chapter by Chapter excerpts from Boy About Town: A Memoir, published by Windmill Books/William Heinemann.

They were all at least fourteen, this ‘crew’, seasoned teenagers to my eyes, yet they never looked down on me; instead, they took me on as if I was some sort of mascot, educating me in the ways of the terraces while shielding me from its worst dangers. We started travelling to away matches together – sometimes me and Jeffries in the car with his mum, and occasionally his dad, but more often a group of us on a supporters’ coach or train – and they’d take me into the opposing team’s home end with them, yet somehow protect me from the fight that inevitably followed our invasion.
