I posted this on my Facebook page Friday December 14, around 3:45pm. I realize it needs to be stated here as well.
I tend to only use my Facebook page for professional purposes. But I can not go into the weekend without expressing just how physically sick I feel about the deadly shootings at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut today. As a parent, my heart goes out to those who have suffered the most devastating loss imaginable. And as a Trustee on my local school board, I feel immense pain knowing that however hard we try to protect our children at school, whatever precautions we take, whatever policies we set, however devoted our staff, many of whom would lay down their own lives to protect their students, we are all but powerless when we come up against people carrying guns who are dead set on murder.
I switched off Twitter a while ago because I could not cope with the deluge of opinions, even though many of the people I follow were expressing my own thoughts. My feeling after this latest, deadliest of attacks is that we need an UNARMED revolution against the current gun laws in this country, that acquiescence to and acceptance of the NRA and those who read the Second Amendment as they see fit is no longer an option. Not when we send our kids off to the presumed safety of elementary school and they don’t come home again. But for now, I’m off to cuddle my kids. Peace.
