So I was boxing up all my dance music compilations last night: I’d use the term ‘mix CDs’ but when the American rave scene started the DJ culture had yet to blossom with it and nobody thought to market them like that. I’ve got over a decade’s worth, and they tell the primarily American story of techno, house, electronica, and all manner of sub-genres within. I knew I had a lot of them, but I didn’t realise until I packed that I had a thousand. 1,000 electronic music compilations. A thousand. That’s not including the 100 drum and bass CDs I sold at the last stoop sale NOR the fact that probably a third of that thousand are double CDs. It’s certainly not including rock compilations, soundtracks, samplers etc, of which there must therefore be a couple thousand more.
I’m trying NOT to take all my music with me on the move, but this particular book-case full tells a story, one that I was briefly involved in, and it’s a story I’d like to be able to retell in coming years. So yes, most of them went in the box. Make that boxes.
