Independence Day O’Connor
More experienced political journalists than myself will have far more detailed reactions to Justice Sandra Day O’Connor’s resignation from the Supreme Court than I can possibly offer. Not least amidst the editorial examinations is the question of what her resignation means for the future of the Supreme Court – and for American law – given that her replacement will be nominated by the current President. But for now, let me just note that Sandra Day O’Connor was widely considered a ‘moderate’ Judge – which means, perhaps, that she was the only one capable of reaching reaching her own conclusions based not on the party line but a free mind. She did, for example, side with conservative judges on the Eminent Domain issue just last week. Such independence will be sadly missed in a country that is routinely falling down along partisan lines.
