It’s Pretty Close to Rockville

Posie and I are taking Noel with us to Jones Beach today – to see R.E.M. in concert. As you’ll have seen from occasional photos here, Noel is music mad, and rarely lets an hour go by without strapping on his acoustic guitar and breaking into a chorus of “Superman.” The good news is that R.E.M. are raking through their catalogue on this tour as if it’s simply a jukebox. Believe it or not, they have played an astounding 57 (that’s a full Heinz variety’s worth) in just eleven shows to date. (Has any group ever come anywhere close to this?) The bad news is that “Superman” is not among them. Yet. We live in hope.

Have to say, I am really really looking forward to this show, more so than since I got a ticket for the original R.E.M. Unplugged MTV show in ’91 (?) and had to give it up to Posie, as I was meant to be interviewing Sir Coxsone Livingstone for Rapido. He didn’t show. This was in the days before mobile phones.

Here’s hoping for a beautiful evening under the stars, out by the water.

PS: The header will make sense to those who know Long Island.

Above: R.E.M. perform “Superman” in 1986 with its writer, Gary Zekley. Don’t you just love YouTube?

    Tony:

I hope you have a great time and enjoy the show. I saw them at the Sasquatch festival in Washington State in May and loved pretty much every minute. You probably won’t read this before you go but The National are definitely worth getting there early for.

Yes Tony, but what about the actual REM concert?
