Monday Morning Mix

A Monday morning wintry mix of snow, sleet, and ice caused cancellation of local schools today: the first “snow day” of the winter, and I have a feeling we’re going to be in for a lot of them over the next four months. (Unlike last year, when snow didn’t show until February.) Anyway, the weather not being half as bad as it actually was meant to be, I still went out on a Monday morning run, partly to test my new screw-shoes in precisely such snowy-icy conditions for an upcoming mountain hike-run that I somehow signed myself up for about two days after proclaiming the season was “over.”

Fortunately, my iPod’s shuffle function was fully up to the task for keeping me company this morning. Sometimes it delivers one dud after another that I keep meaning to delete from the Pod next time I hook it up to iTunes (but never get around to). Today I was pretty happy with it selection and, ipso factor, with my collection. Here are the fifteen songs it kept me happy with:

Chelsea Dagger – The Fratellis
Sandpaper Blues – Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros
Max’s Kansas City – Wayne County & The Back Street Boys (not the Back Street Boys who just reformed, I hasten to add…)
Track 09 – Northern Soul compilation (ah, don’t you love it when you burn someone else’s CD but it doesn’t have the track listing on it?)
Blow Out (Portishead Remix) – Radiohead
Dick Is A Killer – rx
Champagne Supernova (live)– Ben Folds Five
Riot in Cell Block #9 – The Robins
Down But Not Out The Mooney Suzuki
Mannish Boy – Muddy Waters
Packing Things Up On The Scene (Loving Hand Dub Remix) – Radio 4
When I Disappear – Stellastarr*
This Charming Man – The Smiths
Bug Powder Dust – Bomb The Bass
10,000 Lakes – Kid Dakokta

NB: “Dick Is A Killer” is that fantastic George W. Bush cut-up speech – in which the President has a sex change – that was big news a few years ago. It’s available all over the place online, with the producer’s full permission to share it and even remix if you like: you can stream it or download it with one click of the mouse from here. This new American citizen heartily recommends it.
