Music That Matters
Today I give praise to Cheryl Waters of KEXP for her continued impeccable taste. I listen to Cheryl not so much via her mid-day show on America’s best music radio station (only because I don’t have the spare time), but through her occasional Podcasts on KEXP’s free-form Music That Matters series. This morning I set off running to her latest hour-long downloadable set, made available last Friday, and by the time I came home I’d been introduced to Pinback, Pseudosix, Yeasayer, Ha Ha Tonka, Blitzen Trapper, The Spinto Band and Wooden Ships, was refamiliarized with The Magic Numbers, Chris and Thomas, and Iron and Wine, and enjoyed a slightly tokenistic Mali dance act in conclusion, Issa Bagayogo.
In case, like me, you don’t recognize most of the names on this particular Podcast Playlist, you should know that Ms. Waters is something of an unreconstructed shoegazing Anglophile; she often highlights bands with hazy psychedelic riffs and echo-driven vocals. This particular podcast, however, is entitled “How We Breathe” after the opening song by Pinback, and is more – though not exclusively – laid-back. A splendid way to start my day – and a great to fill up an hour of yours.
