Soul Sonic Forces

My long-standing friend Peter Jervis, who I know as Jaf from the days when he fronted the Jamming! Records band Zeitgeist, has always had impeccable taste in soul music. (Zeitgeist’s cover version of “Ball of Confusion” became what we may safely call a “turntable hit” back in 1981-82.) Just how impeccable will be apparent when you listen to his guest appearance on “SD’s Sonic Diary” on Salford City Radio on Wednesday April 13. Thanks to the wonders of SoundCloud, you can listen as often as you like. And you can listen right here.

It was a good day for him to do the show. Three thousand miles away, our monthly local Rock Doc crew got together the same evening to watch Respect Yourself: The Stax Records Story. Any number of documentaries have a good story; any number of them have good music. I’m not sure I’ve seen one that has this good a story combined with this much exceptional music. Some of the performances are quite stunning. The Catskill 45s are busy learning “Hold On! I’m Comin'” and “B-A-B-Y” for their 1966 party this summer right as I type…
