Staten Island is the new Manhattan
…Well, not quite. But rock-loving residents of New York City’s most maligned borough have to be feeling pretty good about themselves this week. The line-up for the two-day Across The Pond festival has been announced, and it brings Oasis, The Killers, Jet, and Doves all the way to the Richmond County Bank Ballpark, along with home city heroes Interpol and the New York Dolls. Historians are probably combing the history books right now to see when a line-up like this last congregated in the most outer of outer boroughs.
The simultaneous Brooklyn event, to be held at the Keyspan Park on Coney Island, includes Pixies, Gang of Four, Beck and Belle and Sebastian. The overall line-up is such a feast that I imagine many punters will be frustrated at having to choose between one show and the other. I can’t help but think we’d have been better off with the same event at the same venue for both days, giving ticketholders the option to spend one day on Staten Island, one in Brooklyn, see a dozen good acts and not feel like they’re missing out on anything. I should also point out that, unlike British festivals, there’s unlikely to be much by way of sideshows here, unless the promoters surprise us and allow all day re-entry, in which case the rides and freak shows of Coney Island will offer distractions a-plenty.
Tickets go on sale this Friday, $55 a head. Expect them to sell out immediately.
