The Coolest Film of the Year
The Trailer may or may not do it justice. Perhaps you have to see the whole thing, like we did. On Friday night, my 15-year old son Campbell and I went, on a whim, to see Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, and we haven’t so much fun since… well, not in a long long time. What’s not to love in our particular father-son world when we get to see a movie that combines real-world video game action in a comic book format, set in a perfectly realistic Toronto indie rock scene, with an adorable leading man, a gorgeous love interest, a potty mouthed friend, a gay room-mate, a 17-year old high school wanna-be – and Jason Schwartman as a patronizing, two-faced record company executive? The music (almost all of it original) is fantastic, the fight scenes genuinely hilarious, the language, clothing and scenery all true to form – and best of all, this movie has a heart, in a way that other action films we’ve seen of late (Inception and Kick-Ass coming straight to mind) do not.
Oh, and it happens to be funny as shit. Really.
