The election by the numbers


Indulge me for doing this. I was one of those kids who averaged out football attendances every week!

Board of Ulster County elections,
uselectionatlas.org and New York Times

and do not appear to include absentee ballots which will, even if they don’t affect percentages, certainly push Barack Obama’s final popular vote tally much higher.

Number of votes cast for Barack Obama in 2008: 65,939,668
(Percentage of popular vote: 52.5%)

Number of votes cast for George W. Bush in 2004: 62,040,610 (50.73%)
Number of votes cast for George W. Bush in 2000: 50,460,110 (47.87%)
Number of votes cast for Bill Clinton in 1996: 47,400,125 (49.23%)
Number of votes cast for Bill Clinton in 1992: 44,909,806 (43.01%)

Highest percentage of popular vote in last 100 years: Lyndon B. Johnson, 1964: 61%

Percentage of popular vote won by Barack Obama: 52.5%
Percentage of electoral college votes won by Barack Obama: 68%

Percentage of popular votes won by George W. Bush in 2000: 47.87%

Feeling among friends and family at Barack Obama being elected President: Priceless!
