The Smiths and R.E.M.: Compare and Contrast
Back in April, I gave a talk at a local library on R.E.M. and The Smiths, comparing and contrasting what I firmly consider the two most important and influential bands from the U.S.A. and U.K., respectively, of the 1980s. (I have written extensive biographies on both, of course.) Joining me to connect the musical dots was my good friend Robert Burke Warren. The talk was filmed by David McDonald, who kindly edited together this short clip, whereby I hone in on the particular roles of Johnny Marr and Peter Buck. Enjoy.
