The Smiths at the Haçienda, February 1983
As we celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of The Smiths as recording artists, with ‘Hand In Glove,’ let’s go back three more months to the gig that produced its B-side: The Haçienda, Manchester, February 4 1983. It was just their third show, only their second with Andy Rourke on bass. As I note in A Light That Never Goes Out,
Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of the Haçienda show is the set itself: of the eight songs, two would become hit singles, and those that did not join them on a bestselling debut LP would become equally celebrated as B-sides, one of them actually recorded from the mixing desk at that show.
That song would be ‘Handsome Devil.’ See them perform it below, and follow the link afterwards to the whole gig.
A reminder that I’ll be reading from the book at the Bell House in Brooklyn next Wednesday (see previous post). Cheers.
