Like Father, Like Son
I don’t normally post pictures of myself here, but after last Sunday’s Earth Day celebrations in Phoenicia, Noel came home and got out his guitar; I got mine out to join him and next I knew he was leading me round the outdoors, suggesting we play something together in various different locations. Posie was quick with the camera. It was a lovely father-son moment.
These pictures feel mildly relevant to the fact that John Weller, Paul Weller’s father and manager, passed away yesterday. I knew him well for several years (a long time ago); he was quite the character, a relentlessly positive champion for his son’s talents. There’s not a Jam fan in the world wouldn’t recognize his voice from introducing the Jam onstage. Indeed, it’s on just about every live Jam CD, LP and tape in existence.
I’ve got a lot of friends in my neighborhood who’ve lost parents of late; about the only positive thing you can say about such a painful experience is that it’s the natural order of things. Nobody, after all, should ever have to bury their kid. So as we continue to say goodbye to the old guard (RIP John Weller), let’s also raise a glass to the new breed. Cheers Noel.
